The great folk/rocker could not have rocked harder than he does right here, at a 1981 Fairport Convention reunion in whose closing song Thompson channels The Killer.
Lots of fun. It reminds me of another favorite RT moment—it may be an old routine but it remains unique for me—where with him in the middle of a too-hot-to-touch solo one of his band mates pulled out a camera and snapped a picture, then went right back to the beat.
Thanx, Greil. I've never seen that one, but it musta been humorous. I like it, too, when on this one he shouts "One more!" at least twice. Having too much fun to stop. Reminds one, of course, of Van's proverbial "IT'S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW!!
That is a *killer* cover indeed (pun intended), and Richard's love of old rock 'n' roll is on display elsewhere as well - great cover of "It Should Have Been Me" on the 'Guitar/Vocal' album, plus various chestnuts he's pulled out in live shows over the years.
I love this: "Thompsonia" - I assume it's pronounced Tomp-so-nia, with the accent on the long 'o' in the second syllable? An apt term for The Master's enormous and wide-ranging contributions to music.
And by the way, that Jerry Lee Lewis album with the Nashville Teens may not be the greatest record ever released, but it IS one of greatest live albums out there, albeit somewhat obscure. Jerry Lee is in fine form and the Nashville Teens absolutely kick butt, everything is played fast and precise, and the energy level of both band crowd is clearly audible. It is a GREAT album and well worth seeking out -
Finally - I recently finished reading your Earl Palmer book and loved it. Great job!
Thank you! Delighted to hear you liked Backbeat. I suffered to write that book, as I've said over and over, and now it looks like the movie is gonna be no picnic--but I won't say why in public.
Actually, the word is "Thompsoniana", as in "Wordsworthiana" or "Stonesiana"". I gotta go fix it....
I don't know that I'd call Live at the Star Club the GOAT live album, but that opening version of "Money" is, er, killer.
Jerry Lee was so pissed off at the world, he played his ass off….

And between song patter when the audience was encouraged to purchase the latest release “in all available formats”
