It is truly one of the greatest performances in slide guitar playing. I remember vividly where I was the moment I first heard that solo: goose bumps crept up one arm and down the other with the slide and left me in a daze. I listened to it over and over. There are also other Hawaiian influenced moments later in that song where he slowly moves through passing tones that shouldn’t work, but in the hands of a master they certainly do. I met Sonny (brilliant) for the first time on Hiatt’s tour and remember him mentioning playing in front of Ry. He did it justice.

Cooder played it both times I saw Little Village—not as well as he did on "Bring the Family." As he says in my piece, "I got lucky that time."

As I've probably mentioned, I saw that initial "Bring the Family Tour" in Northampton Ma on what turned out to be Hiatt's birthday. It was a small crowd and , while I was disappointed that Cooder wasn't onstage ( which I really didn't expect but a guy can dream) Landreth's work more than compensated. A most memorable show

No, I didn't know you saw that band. I saw Hiatt and the Goners at Jazzfest, probably 1990, with Ashley Cleveland singing backup. Hiatt moved like a madman onstage, loose-limbed and manic. Jim Dickinson said, "Yeah, he got that from Jesse Winchester." Dickinson was always coming up with interesting nuggets
